You probably have heard of Google Adword, and you probably already know that you can get visitors to your website in the matter of minutes… but did you know you can legally steal your competitors’ visitors from it. The real benefit of this is that you get the targeted traffic for a fraction of the cost, which means you will make more profit.

So how does it work? At the time of writing this, Google, Yahoo and MSN allows you to bid on brand names, company names and trademark names on their systems, and it’s 100% LEGAL. So let’s say if you bid on the keyword “Dell”, you ad will appear on the side when someone does a search for “Dell”. The number of competing ads is usually low because who wants to be ranked for the keyword “Dell” apart from the company. That’s what most people thinks, which is the reason why this concept still works because it’s not saturated yet. Just remember that you’re not limited to one brand name per ad, you can have multiple ads on different brand names. Why? Because you want to see which ad performs better. Bidding on brand names/trademark names that companies have invested a lot of money on is a way of leveraging time and money. You only want to do this on well known companies/products, which is why you need to do some research if you’re not familiar with the leaders in your industry.

The concept of this may sound simple, however, to get the maximum benefits from it you’ll need to have some good ads to grab people’s attention. It is more difficult to get people to click on your ads when they searching for your competitor’s name products or services. So do prepare to see the click through rate to be lower compared to the generic keywords, but you will also see the cost of per click is 5-10 times lower. And this is why you need to test the ads. If the results are worst than your generic keywords then try to write a different ad. If you have some good copywriting skills you will able to see more benefit from this concept. I won’t be getting into copywriting right now but if you want to learn more about it I would highly recommend Joe Vitale’s Hypnotic Writing book.

Another way to “steal” your competitors’ traffic is to buy misspelled domain names and redirect them to your website. So if someone accidently typed in “your misspelled domain” instead of your competitor’s domain, he/she will be redirected to your website. Ideally you want to buy names that have the same extension (.com .net .org .co.uk) as your competitors’ website. Even if you only get 1000 visitors in a year from that domain I’m sure you will get at least 1 customer out of that, and how much did it cost you to acquire that customer?

I’m assuming that you already have a website if you’re reading this. But…do you know how many visitors came to your website yesterday? Where they came from? And how long they stayed?

There are a number of services (or software) you could use to track website visitors but the one I would recommend is Google Analytics. Feel free to do some research yourself. The setup process is easy and it gives you more information about your visitors than you will ever need. If you are planning to use AdWord to promote your products/services you will be able to track the click-through and conversion rate in the Analytics control panel as well.

Like most online services, you’ll need to sign up for an account and here’s the link to the sign up page. Once the sign up process is completed you will be able to add a new website profile to your account. All you have to do is enter your website’s address there and then wait for it to process the information. After that you should be given some codes to put on your website. You need to put the codes on ALL of your pages (not just the homepage). Open each file in Notepad or something similar and scroll all the way down until you see “
” (without the quote). Now copy and paste the Google Analytics codes between
and whatever is above that. Once you’ve done this to all of pages you can upload them back to your server via FTP. Check your Google Analytics account after 24 hours and you will see some data there.

This tool gives you valuable information about your visitors, with it you can find out how effective your new advertising campaign is, which advertising channel is more profitable and many more. It’s important to use the traffic results to guide your marketing direction so that you will get more ROI.

It is important to have most if not all of your website pages in the Google’s index, so that your products/services can be found more easily on the Internet. You might want to get the homepage indexed first if your website is brand new. If you need help with that please read this post.

First of all, use this online tool to create your sitemap. It will take a minute or two for the system to go through all the pages of your website and then it will give you the option of downloading the generated sitemap file(xml file). Download the file to your desktop (or somewhere easy to find) and rename it to sitemap.xml. The next step is slightly more complicated, you’ll need to login to your website control panel where all the files and images are, and put the sitemap file in the root folder. An easy way to do that is to find a file named ‘index.html’ and that’s where you should put the sitemap file.

The next step is much easier compared to previous one. You need to register for a Google Webmaster Tools account, it’s completely free and here’s the link.

Once you’ve gone through the registration process you should see the dashboard. Add your website and then click the add link next to your website to add a sitemap. The type of sitemap should be ‘general’ and in the third option you’ll need to type in the name of your sitemap file (sitemap.xml).

Is your new website still not in Google? The best way to check if your website is in Google is to type site:mywebsitename.com (replace the “mywebsitename” with your domain ) in Google’s search box and click search. If you see “no results are found” that means your website is not in Google’s index yet.

Do not use the URL submission form because it takes too long (about 5 week).

There are number of ways to get your website in Google quickly, for example, you can ask somone who has a established website to link to your website or you could buy a link from link networks like Linkworth. Make sure you get the link from a related website if you’re going to use Linkworth because it will give you more benefits. However, if you don’t want to spend any money and you have spare time, you could use the following method:

Register for a new account on Stumbleupon.com and Digg.com.

You’ll be asked to confirm your email address; once you’ve done that you can then login to your account.

Submit your website url to both websites. (Make sure you write a good description and pick the right category)

Use the same method discussed above to check if your website has been indexed.

After the homepage is indexed your next task is to get the other pages in there as well. The best way to do that is to create something called sitemap for your website and use that to inform Google about your website structure. Here’s the article on how to create and submit a sitemap.
