Is your website providing value to your business? Nearly 90% of businesses have a website now but only a small percentage of them are benefiting from their website. If you want to be part of this small group of people you need to know what they did to get to where they are today, and you just have to do the same. To save you time, we have already done the hard work for you. These are the five things we’ve found in successful website owners:

They track and test everything with the help of tools like Google Analytic. They track the number of visitors, what keywords were used, how long people stayed on site, which is the most popular page, etc. They use this information to guide them for making the right marketing decisions as well as to find out which methods are working for them and which ones are not. Not only do they track their website visitors and marketing methods, they also test different layout designs, headlines, images and promotional offers.

They do not rely on their own ‘experience’ or a friend’s recommendation in choosing advertising methods, instead, they would try out multiple methods, both online and offline, and to let the audience decide which ones are working for their website. Because they are tracking everything, they will be in more control of their budget and know exactly which ones are profitable quickly.

They are constantly looking for ways to squeeze more profit out of every visitor because they believe there is no such thing as a perfect website. They use blogs and social media sites to communicate with their audience and find out their wants and needs, then they use this information to shape their website’s design and marketing message.

They understand their target audience, know what their wants and problems are, what magazines they read, where they spend their free time, etc. They never tried to guess their audience’s wants and needs because they know they will most likely be wrong. Instead, they would gather this information by asking the audience themselves. Some choose to give away products or services and some choose to pay a surveying company to do the job. Whichever method you use, you need to make sure the answers are from your target audience.

They understand the importance of marketing, and they treat it like an investment. Whether it’s search engine marketing or traditional marketing, it can take a few weeks, a few months or even a year before results are noticeable. Success website owners understands this, and they are patience. They do the research, write out a plan and commit to it. They advertise consistently, so if their budget is tight they will run an ad every Sunday for 7 months instead of running it every day for a full week.

Are you offering the best product or service in your area, yet you are making the kind of profits that you would like? Chances are, it could be because of your website. Many businesses underestimate the power of having a professionally designed website for their businesses. As a result, their profits are far less than their competitors even though their product or service is better than them.

Make it Simple And Recogniseable
Depending on what your business is about, there are some common factors that are linked to having a good web site. One thing to keep in mind when designing your website is to make it simple and user friendly. The visitors should know what your business offers within 10 seconds after landing on your website. This is why you need to make sure the most important elements are above the fold (the screen they see before scrolling).

The Quality of Your Content
Your goal should be to put as much useful content on your website as possible. Having quality and regularly updated content on your web site will result more return visitors and natural incoming links(links from other websites). Useful content would give the visitors(prospects) more confident to do business with you. Ensure the contents on your website are search engine friendly so that people can find you more easily on the net. This isn’t hard to do. Just remember these three things and your website will be more optimised than 90% of the other websites on the net. 1. Make sure all the main headings are using the H1 or H2 tag. 2. Repeat the keyword phrase at least once or twice on the page. 3. Bold the keyword phrases at least once.

Create The Right Brand Image
You need to think about what your visitor wants before designing the website. Think about what you look for in a website and what you would like to see if you were looking for your own service or product. If you want your service or product to be perceived as the best quality, or the most competitive in your area, then your web site needs to reflect that image. Using colours like pink and green on a business consulting website will certainly not attract many customers. Or, if the layout of your website looks ok on all Internet browsers but not on Google Chrome, it would leave a bad impression to those who do use that browser.

So yes, bad design can seriously hurt your business. If your business is doing pretty well at moment and you put up a badly designed website tomorrow, that could actually do more harm than good to your business. A portion of small businesses are doing just that! What’s more shocking is that they don’t even realise it. To prevent this from happening to you, you must seek help from the professionals. If you can’t afford to pay someone to build a whole website, you should at least get it checked up by a professional before putting on the Web.

If the goal of your business isn’t to provide the best quality product or service then no search engine marketing strategy can help improving your business. No matter what industry you are in, there’re ways to improve on what you’re offering at moment. Research your competitions and find out what they offering. Then think of something which you can include to increase the perceived value of your existing products or services without increasing the cost too much. Alternatively, you could improve the quality of the existing product or service and keeping the price same as the others. Do make sure the improvements you planning to make are highly desirable in your market.

One of the many benefits is that people will talk about your service or product both online and offline. Thus, will attract “natural” links from forums, reviewers’ blog, news sites…etc Websites that rank high in the search engines are usually those who are providing high quality services or products and are focused on acquiring satisfied and engaged customers. There are many factors that can attract people to buy products or services you are offering. According to some researches made by the Gallup Organization in Nebraska; the most important element that make customers come back to a fast food shop is “the people”. People is one of the most important element in any businesses. The other important thing is having a user friendly website, this is like putting most of your products in the lower shelves so that most people can reach.

There are a number of ways to improve the usability of your website, for example, if you are selling electronic gadgets through your eCommerce store, you can make description of your products as detail as possible, include a photo for every product and make sure the shopping cart is as simple as possible.

Videos are getting more and more popular so if there’s enough requests for the same information, you could put up a series of training videos to show people how to do the most asked things. Also, you could put up videos that others have created, which are beneficial to your customers. The objective of this strategy is to provide your visitors with enough information that are related to your products or services so that they can make the right decision quickly. The additional information will also give the visitors more confident to do business with you.

The more you focus on the customer service. the better your business will be, and the better your website will rank in the search engines.

Building a list is like building relationship with your customers. It’s one of the vital things you can do to grow your business. Why? Because the power of repeat customers. If you have a list you can market your products/services to them by email or post. Email is more cost-effective and it usually converts better than post. You can do this over and over again, but remember not to do it too often otherwise your customers will either ignore your future emails or unsubscribe the list.

Try to focus on building a good relationship first, by that I mean focus on helping them and giving them valuable information like an ebook or report on something which your customers may be interested in. Remember that they are real people, therefore they have needs and problems. You want to find out what these needs and problems are and then help them to find the right solutions. It takes time and dedication to build a good relationship with your customers, but it’s well worth it. A good starting point would be emailing your list on a weekly basis with top quality information and try to get a feel of their likings. Let them tell you what they want, not what you think they want.

So how do you get an opt-in box onto your website? This is actually easier than you may think, all you need is some basic Internet and computer knowledge, you certainly don’t need to know anything web programming language. There’re online list building management services like Aweber, which does 95% of the work for you. The cost is very reasonable, its user friendly interface allows you setup multiple campaigns, manage the list, setup auto responder, customise your email template, track clicks and many more. I highly recommend you to customise your email template and opt-in box to match the look and feel of your website.

Do experiment with different ways of getting people to opt in. One of the most popular opt-in offers is giving away free eBooks or reports. This method works better on some industries than the others. If your target audiences are not so computer savvy he/she might never heard of the term eBook, if that’s the case you have two options: 1. Name it something else. 2. Try a different offer. Test, test and test again, the key is to let the results to show you what works and what doesn’t.

The term blog is short for web log – a type of website which you can easily add/update contents without any knowledge of web design. The blog creation process is so simple that you can have a blog up and running in less than ten minutes if you don’t mind having some branded materials on it. Blogger.com would be a good place to start off with if you just want to get a taste of blogging but if you’re serious about blogging or if you want a more professional and reliable blog then you may want to have a look at WordPress. One of many advantages of using WordPress is that all files are stored in your own server instead of a shared server that has millions of other blogs (Blogger.com for example) on it. You can integrate WordPress into your existing website if you already have one and to do that you probably need to hire someone for this depending on your requirements.

So what can a blog do for your business?

You can use a blog to keep your customer up to date about your latest products/services. For example, you can name the blog “Our Weekly Special Offers” and update it once a week.

You can use a blog to provide valuable information that relate to your industry – information which your target audience would be interested in. For example, if you’re in the music instrument business and you sell guitars and drums, you can use the blog to write tutorials on how to play guitar, how to choose a good guitar, how to tune a guitar, review a new guitar once a week ..etc

You can use a blog to improve the search engine ranking of your existing website. Search engines doesn’t rank websites, they rank pages, a link from one page to another would be counted as a vote and the more votes you have the higher you will be ranked in the search engines. Of course, not all votes are the same, there’re many factors that determine how much a link is worth in the search engine’s system. I won’t go into the finer details of how search engine works, for now you just need to remember that the more pages you have (must be related), the higher your website will rank and the more traffic you will receive. You don’t need to do anything special, you just need to write quality contents that are good for humans, not search engines. Never try to stuff keywords in articles because it will do more damages than goods in the LONG TERM. This does take time and you probably won’t see any significant results in the first 6 months, stick to it for another 6 months or so and you will see your website traffic and business improve dramatically.
